Study of alteration and degradation products of a Roman marble sarcophagus located in the medieval cloister of the old st Cosimatoâs Convent, now the new "Regina Margherita Hospitalâ (Rome)
Optical and SEM-EDS microscopy, FT-IR and mFT-IR spectroscopy investigations have been applied to the study of alteration and degradation products of a Roman sarcophagus located in the medieval cloister of St Cosimatoâs Convent, now the new âRegina Margherita Hospitalâ (Rome) before restoration work.
This scientific analysis was performed in order to compare it with a diagnosis report based on the restorerâs expertise. The sarcophagus is small and consists of a single block of fine-grained marble covered by a thick pink patina. The results obtained from this diagnostic investigation, allow us to draw important conclusions about the state of conservation of this archaeological artefact. The main components found in the samples analyzed are: black crust, calcium oxalate, organic matter due to recent conservation treatment, calcite, iron-oxides and coloured earths. More Data and New Tools. Advances in Parsing the Index Thomisticus Treebank
This paper investigates the recent advances in parsing the Index Thomisticus Treebank, which encompasses Medieval Latin texts by Thomas Aquinas. The research focuses on two types of variables. On the one hand, it examines the impact that a larger dataset has on the results of parsing; on the other hand, performances of new parsers are analysed with respect to less recent tools. Term of comparison to determine the effective parsing advances are the results in parsing the Index Thomisticus Treebank described in a previous work. First, the best performing parser among those concerned in that study is tested on a larger dataset than the one originally used. Then, some parser combinations that were developed in the same study are evaluated as well, assessing that more training data result in more accurate performances. Finally, to examine the impact that newly available tools have on parsing results, we train, test, and evaluate two neural parsers chosen among those best performing in the CoNLL 2018 Shared Task. Our experiments reach the highest accuracy rates achieved so far in automatic syntactic parsing of the Index Thomisticus Treebank and of Latin overall

The computational processing of linguistic data raised for the first time the need to sistematically treat the problem of homography. This article puts the basis for studying homography in Latin. After an overview on possible types of homography, the authors report on results obtained from the LEMLAT lemmatizer.
Lastly, some research perspectives which are considered necessary in order to obtain a systematic treatment of Latin homography are envisaged

The Index Thomisticus Treebank Project: Annotation, Parsing and Valency Lexicon
We present an overview of the Index Thomisticus Treebank project (IT-TB). The ITTB
consists of around 60,000 tokens from the Index Thomisticus by Roberto Busa SJ, an 11-
million-token Latin corpus of the texts by Thomas Aquinas. We briefly describe the annotation
guidelines, shared with the Latin Dependency Treebank (LDT). The application of data-driven
dependency parsers on IT-TB and LDT data is reported on. We present training and parsing
results on several datasets and provide evaluation of learning algorithms and techniques.
Furthermore, we introduce the IT-TB valency lexicon extracted from the treebank. We report
on quantitative data of the lexicon and provide some statistical measures on subcategorisation
structures
LiLa: Linking Latin Risorse linguistiche per il latino nel Semantic Web (AIUCD 2019)
The LiLa: Linking Latin project aims to build a Knowledge Base of language resources for the study of Latin (corpora, digital lexicons, natural-language-processing tools), based on the Linked Open Data paradigm. In this paper, we discuss the goals and motivation of the project. In particular, we focus on the role played by the lemma as a hub node that holds together the network of linguistic information. The architecture of LiLa is therefore based on lemmas and their morphological properties. The paper illustrates the strategies used to build a collection of Latin lemmas and the first experiments to link them to a set of textual resources (Latin treebanks).Il progetto LiLa: Linking Latin intende creare una Knowledge Base di risorse linguistiche (corpora, lessici digitali e strumenti di trattamento automatico del linguaggio) per lo studio del latino secondo il modello dei Linked Open Data. Questo articolo descrive gli obiettivi e le motivazioni del progetto, soffermandosi in particolare sulla centralitĂ del lemma come forma che consente di creare la rete di informazioni linguistiche. Lâarchitettura di LiLa sâincentra dunque sul nodo cardine rappresentato dal lemma e sulle sue proprietĂ morfologiche. Lâarticolo discute le strategie impiegate per creare una banca dati di lemmi latini che possa supportare tale modello, e i primi esperimenti volti a connettere risorse testuali (treebank del latino) alla raccolta dei lemmi
